CCPR Centre and the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda (NCHRD-U) recently organized a groundbreaking webinar that brought together Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to discuss the dissemination of the Human Rights Committee recommendations for Uganda adopted in June 2023 This webinar served as a platform to reflect on the recent Human Rights Session in Geneva and outline strategies for effectively disseminating and advocating for these recommendations.

Feedback on Participation at the Human Rights Session in Geneva

The webinar began with an in-depth review of CSOs' participation in the Human Rights 138th session held in Geneva on 27 and 28 June 2023 . Participants shared their experiences and highlighted the challenges they faced.

Overview of Conclusion Observations and Presentation of Priorities Recommendations

During the webminar, the heart of the discussion revolved around the conclusions and observations made by the Human Rights Committee regarding Uganda's human rights record.

The three recomendations selected by the Committee for the follow-up procedure on Uganda are: para. 9 (National human rights institution), para. 13 (discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity) and para. 27 (liberty and security of person).

Activities and Strategies for Effectively Disseminating the Recommendations

Participants explored various strategies and activities aimed at disseminating the Committee's recommendations to a wider audience. This included using social media, public awareness campaigns, and community engagement. Furthermore, the webinar emphasized the importance of collaboration among CSOs to amplify their collective voices.

Additional Activities for Dissemination, Monitoring, and Advocacy

In addition to traditional advocacy strategies, the webinar introduced innovative approaches for disseminating and monitoring the Committee's recommendations. Participants discussed the importance of utilizing modern technology and data-driven tools to track progress and hold stakeholders accountable.

Planning

A key takeaway from the webinar was the need for a structured plan that clearly delineates the responsibilities of each CSO. Collaborative efforts can be more effective when there is a well-defined roadmap and assigned tasks. Discussions focused on developing a coordinated action plan to ensure that all aspects of dissemination, monitoring, and advocacy are covered.
