UN Treaty Bodies Litigators' Meeting
Human Rights NGOs met to discuss the strengthening of the follow-up procedure concerning Views on individual communications
On the 22 and 23 of November, Open Society Foundation, the International Service for Human Rights and the CCPR-Centre organised a seminar to discuss the implementation of UN Treaty Bodies and the effectiveness of the litigation procedure before the Human Rights Committee. NGOs such as the Mental Disability Advocacy Center, the International Disability Alliance, Women's Link Worldwide, Amnesty International, Human Rights Law Centre, the Association for the Prevention of Torture and the International Commission of Jurists among others participated in the seminar.
The discussion was very enriching thanks also to the guest speakers: Godofredo Torreblanca (UN Petitions Team), Krister Thelin (former Human Rights Committee Special Rapporteur for Follow-up on Views) and Felice Gaer (Vice-Chairperson of the Committee Against Torture).
The main issue that came out of the discussion was the need for the Committee to monitor better the implementation of the Covenant as well as provide a better clearness on its Views (especially regarding reparation).
